This section presents the research quality results from ERA 2018. It summarises the ratings results for two- and four-digit Units of Evaluation (UoEs), and presents analyses that highlight areas of research excellence in Australia’s eligible institutions. The charts display the full array of results at the two- and four-digit level for assessed UoEs.

Note: RECs assign a rating to two- and four-digit UoEs where there is sufficient volume for an evaluation. The highest rating is a 5, i.e. the UoE is characterised by evidence of outstanding performance well above world standard presented by the suite of indicators used for evaluation. A rating of 1 is well below world standard (see ERA Rating Scale in the Introduction of this report for a full description of the rating scale).

Rating distribution for all two-digit UoEs

Donut graph showing the distribution of ratings across all two-digit UoEs. Rating 4 had the highest distribution at 32 per cent, Rating 3 then had 28 per cent, Rating 5 had 24 per cent, Rating 2 had 14 per cent and Rating 1 had one per cent.

Totals in the doughnut charts may not sum to 100% due to rounding.

Rating distribution for all four-digit UoEs

Donut graph showing the distribution of ratings across all four-digit UoEs. Rating 5 had the highest distribution at 40 per cent. Rating 4 then had 29 per cent, Rating 3 had 23 per cent, Rating 2 had seven percent and Rating 1 had one per cent.

Two-digit UoEs

Of the 677 two-digit Units of Evaluation (UoEs) that were rated during ERA 2018, 164 attracted a rating of 5 (well above world standard) and 219 received a rating of 4 (above world standard). This is a total of 383 two-digit UoEs rated above or well above world standard.

Number of two-digit UoE ratings

Stacked bar graph showing the ratings of each two-digit UoE.

Note: These data are two-digit results only and do not include ratings in the underlying four-digit codes.
The ratings among two-digit UoEs are also presented as a percentage distribution, allowing comparisons between disciplines of different sizes. FoRs 10 Technology, 01 Mathematical Sciences and 11 Medical and Health Sciences each had 90 per cent or more of their two-digit UoEs rated as 4 or 5.

Distribution of UoE ratings by two-digit FoR codes

100 per cent stacked bar graph showing the distribution of UoE ratings among two-digit FoR codes.

Note: FoRs are ordered by the proportion of two-digit UoEs that recieved a rating of 4 or 5. The numbers in the brackets following the FoR name show the total number of two-digit UoEs that were rated in that FoR.

Four-digit UoEs

Of the 1,923 four-digit UoEs that were rated during ERA 2018, 774 (40 per cent) attracted a rating of 5 (i.e. well above world standard). A further 553 (29 per cent) received a rating of 4 (above world standard) while 448 (23 per cent) were rated 3 (at world standard). Overall, 69 per cent of four-digit UoEs were rated above or well above world standard.

The number of assessed UoEs and the distribution of ratings among these UoEs varied by discipline. In absolute terms, 11 Medical and Health Sciences had the largest number of four-digit UoEs (320). The FoR 10 Technology had the fewest (24), but achieved excellent results with 22 rated above or well above world standard.

Number of four-digit UoE ratings (grouped into two-digit FoR code level)

Stacked bar graph displaying UoE ratings by number of four-digit UoEs. This is displayed at the aggregated two digit code.

Note: These data are four-digit results only and do not include the two-digit ratings.
The percentage distribution of four-digit UoEs is shown (grouped into the two-digit FoR code level), allowing comparisons between disciplines of different sizes. The FoRs 04 Earth Sciences and 05 Environmental had more than 98 per cent of their underlying four-digit UoEs rated as 4 or 5.

Distribution of UoE ratings for four-digit UoEs (grouped into two-digit FoR code level)

100 per cent stacked bar graph displaying the distribution of ratings for all four-digit UoEs. This is displayed at the aggregated two digit code.

Note: FoRs are ordered by the proportion of four-digit UoEs that recieved a rating of 4 or 5. The numbers in the brackets following the FoR name show the total number of four-digit UoEs that were rated in that two-digit FoR.
