This project aims to examine mediation, negotiation and peacemaking processes in First Nations communities, and the language practices that underpin them. Working under First Nations governance, the project expects to generate new knowledge about how these practices are being sustained, and how are they being adapted to contemporary community- and school-based contexts. The expected outcome is an improved understanding of peacemaking practices in First Nations communities and how they are supported by linguistic practices. The project will provide significant benefits by advancing the design and facilitation of culturally responsive peacemaking processes and improving cross-cultural mediation and negotiation programs.","funding-current":525970.00,"funding-at-announcement":521822,"investigators-current":[{"title":"Dr","firstName":"James","familyName":"Bednall","roleName":"Discovery Early Career Researcher Award","roleCode":"DECRA","isFellowship":true,"orcidIdentifier":"0000-0001-6155-2878 "}],"investigators-at-announcement":[{"title":"Dr","firstName":"James","familyName":"Bednall","roleName":"Discovery Early Career Researcher Award","roleCode":"DECRA","isFellowship":true,"orcidIdentifier":"0000-0001-6155-2878 "}],"organisations-current":[{"organisationName":"Charles Darwin University","roleName":"Administering Organisation","state":"NT"}],"organisations-at-announcement":[{"organisationName":"Charles Darwin University","roleName":"Administering Organisation","state":"NT"}],"field-of-research":[{"isPrimary":true,"code":"4501","name":"Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture, Language and History","type":"FOR20"},{"isPrimary":false,"code":"450108","name":"Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Linguistics and Languages","type":"FOR20"},{"isPrimary":false,"code":"450518","name":"Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and the Law","type":"FOR20"},{"isPrimary":false,"code":"470407","name":"Language Documentation and Description","type":"FOR20"}],"socio-economic-objective":[{"code":"130201","name":"Communication Across Languages and Culture","type":"SEO20"},{"code":"210101","name":"Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Service Programs","type":"SEO20"},{"code":"210404","name":"Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledge","type":"SEO20"}],"international-collaboration":["France"],"lief-register":[],"achievement-summary":null,"national-interest-test-statement":"Peacemaking initiatives in First Nations contexts have been shown to achieve positive results in law and justice related domains, such as being linked to decreasing crimes rates in the communities where they are facilitated. However, there has been little research undertaken into these practices and programs, or the language practices that are involved. This project will improve our understanding of traditional and contemporary peacemaking practices in First Nations communities, how they are being sustained, and the significance of language use in these highly interactional contexts. The project will have direct cultural benefits, by supporting continued and strengthened cultural and linguistic practices in First Nations communities. It will build local capacity to design and facilitate programs, and support local decision-making, providing social benefits. Peacemaking, cross-cultural and language programs provide culturally meaningful work for First Nations people, which is linked to stable employment and participation in local economies. This has both commercial and economic benefits. The project will lead to more efficient and effective design and facilitation of culturally responsive peacemaking processes and improvements to cross-cultural mediation and negotiation programs, which will benefit community services, particularly programs involving justice reinvestment, early intervention and alternative dispute resolution programs."}}}
