Digital platforms can provide generative spaces for sexual expression, sex education and sexual health information, however online spaces are increasing hostile for sexual minorities, who face criminalisation and surveillance. Bringing together local and global stakeholders, including sexual health organisations, public interest technologists, human rights lawyers and affected communities, the project investigates how digital platforms can better safeguard sexual and reproductive rights online. Through participatory and creative methods, it advances a novel theoretical and evidence-based approach to sexual content moderation that reconceptualises online safety and improves platform and regulatory approaches to building safer sexual spaces.","funding-current":533803.00,"funding-at-announcement":529573,"investigators-current":[{"title":"Dr","firstName":"Zahra","familyName":"Stardust","roleName":"Discovery Early Career Researcher Award","roleCode":"DECRA","isFellowship":true,"orcidIdentifier":"0000-0001-8555-4456 "}],"investigators-at-announcement":[{"title":"Dr","firstName":"Zahra","familyName":"Stardust","roleName":"Discovery Early Career Researcher Award","roleCode":"DECRA","isFellowship":true,"orcidIdentifier":"0000-0001-8555-4456 "}],"organisations-current":[{"organisationName":"Queensland University of Technology","roleName":"Administering Organisation","state":"QLD"}],"organisations-at-announcement":[{"organisationName":"Queensland University of Technology","roleName":"Administering Organisation","state":"QLD"}],"field-of-research":[{"isPrimary":true,"code":"4701","name":"Communication and Media Studies","type":"FOR20"},{"isPrimary":false,"code":"470102","name":"Communication Technology and Digital Media Studies","type":"FOR20"}],"socio-economic-objective":[{"code":"220502","name":"Internet, Digital and Social Media","type":"SEO20"},{"code":"230108","name":"Gender and Sexualities","type":"SEO20"},{"code":"230405","name":"Law Reform","type":"SEO20"}],"international-collaboration":["India","Switzerland","United States of America"],"lief-register":[],"achievement-summary":null,"national-interest-test-statement":"Australia’s approach to classification, convergent media and content moderation is rapidly evolving, with recent reviews, inquiries and legislation focused on pornography, online safety, social media and age assurance, including a ban on social media for people under 16. However, there are open questions about how these initiatives will impact sexual and reproductive rights, including the rights to safe sexual experiences, access to sexual health information and freedom of sexual expression. With recent, sweeping changes to content moderation on US-based social media platforms, including the abandonment of fact-checking, there is no consensus over how to build online spaces that support consensual sexual expression while protecting against discrimination, misinformation and hate speech. This project brings together critical sexual health, human rights, legal and community stakeholders to consider how digital platforms can better safeguard sexual and reproductive rights online. It generates evidence that is urgently needed about platform trends, material impacts, opportunities for reform, and community understandings of harm and safety. The project develops guidelines for policymakers with recommendations for law reform and case studies to assist them in navigating a complex, changing technological environment. To maximise reach, the findings will be translated through collaborations with local community artists and in partnership with sexual health organisations."}}}
