Forest restoration projects are a critical strategy in environmental markets to curb climate change and reverse biodiversity loss. This project develops a tool to help decision-makers identify the best land for forest restoration to maximise 1. carbon, 2. biodiversity, and 3. economic benefits while ensuring restoration does not shift agriculture elsewhere negatively impacting other areas. The tool will be used to design the best options for Australia to expand its environmental markets, and then developed to identify options for international market expansion. This project will guide both governments and the many industries who engage with these markets to ensure net environmental and economic outcomes from their restoration projects.","funding-current":534320.00,"funding-at-announcement":530079,"investigators-current":[{"title":"Dr","firstName":"Brooke","familyName":"Williams","roleName":"Discovery Early Career Researcher Award","roleCode":"DECRA","isFellowship":true,"orcidIdentifier":"0000-0002-0692-7507 "}],"investigators-at-announcement":[{"title":"Dr","firstName":"Brooke","familyName":"Williams","roleName":"Discovery Early Career Researcher Award","roleCode":"DECRA","isFellowship":true,"orcidIdentifier":"0000-0002-0692-7507 "}],"organisations-current":[{"organisationName":"The University of Newcastle","roleName":"Administering Organisation","state":"NSW"}],"organisations-at-announcement":[{"organisationName":"The University of Newcastle","roleName":"Administering Organisation","state":"NSW"}],"field-of-research":[{"isPrimary":true,"code":"4104","name":"Environmental Management","type":"FOR20"},{"isPrimary":false,"code":"410401","name":"Conservation and Biodiversity","type":"FOR20"},{"isPrimary":false,"code":"410404","name":"Environmental Management","type":"FOR20"},{"isPrimary":false,"code":"410405","name":"Environmental Rehabilitation and Restoration","type":"FOR20"}],"socio-economic-objective":[{"code":"180601","name":"Assessment and Management of Terrestrial Ecosystems","type":"SEO20"},{"code":"180604","name":"Rehabilitation Or Conservation of Terrestrial Environments","type":"SEO20"},{"code":"190205","name":"Environmental Protection Frameworks (Incl. Carbon and biodiversity markets trade carbon or biodiversity to address environmental issues. This project will help ensure Australia’s rapidly expanding forest restoration based environmental markets function effectively and equitably, avoiding harm to environments and communities locally and internationally. This project will deliver recommendations about carbon and biodiversity market design options and a decision-support tool to guide policymakers in ensuring Australia’s carbon and biodiversity market expansion aligns with long-term sustainability and equity goals. This project benefits the Australian community by enabling: landowners to earn more money, Australia to achieve environmental goals, and position the country as a leader in carbon and biodiversity markets. Ultimately, this project will bring in more trade and investment by enabling an effective carbon and biodiversity market. This project will share key deliverables via: 1. a free web-based resource that presents key insights about how market design options affect individuals, industry, and communities in Australia and the world, in clear non-technical language, 2. policy briefs, reports, and 3. an industry-focused symposium to engage key government and industry stakeholders ensuring the research findings contribute to shaping market development and policy."}}}
