The project aims to enable the integration, long-term adoption, and scalability of social prescribing into Australia’s social system. Social prescribing links people to non-medical services and supports to improve their wellbeing and quality of life. The program will co-design evidence-based infrastructure to support long-term adoption and scalability. Expected outcomes include a secure data hub, enhanced evidence-based social prescribing programs to enable optimised resource allocation, and improved consistency of social services. Given the established cost-effectiveness of social prescribing, significant anticipated benefits include reduced welfare and economic burdens, as well as increased social connection and community wellbeing.\n\n","funding-current":534320.00,"funding-at-announcement":530079,"investigators-current":[{"title":"Dr","firstName":"Rosanne","familyName":"Freak-Poli","roleName":"Discovery Early Career Researcher Award","roleCode":"DECRA","isFellowship":true,"orcidIdentifier":"0000-0003-4072-8699 "}],"investigators-at-announcement":[{"title":"Dr","firstName":"Rosanne","familyName":"Freak-Poli","roleName":"Discovery Early Career Researcher Award","roleCode":"DECRA","isFellowship":true,"orcidIdentifier":"0000-0003-4072-8699 "}],"organisations-current":[{"organisationName":"Monash University","roleName":"Administering Organisation","state":"VIC"}],"organisations-at-announcement":[{"organisationName":"Monash University","roleName":"Administering Organisation","state":"VIC"}],"field-of-research":[{"isPrimary":true,"code":"4409","name":"Social Work","type":"FOR20"},{"isPrimary":false,"code":"440903","name":"Social Program Evaluation","type":"FOR20"}],"socio-economic-objective":[{"code":"200201","name":"Determinants of Health","type":"SEO20"}],"international-collaboration":["Austria","Canada","Denmark","England","Finland","France","Greece","Hong Kong (SAR of China)","Indonesia","Iran","Ireland","Italy","Japan","Korea, Republic of (South)","Malaysia","Netherlands","Norway","Poland","Portugal","Singapore","Spain","Sweden","Switzerland","Taiwan","United States of America","Wales"],"lief-register":[],"achievement-summary":null,"national-interest-test-statement":"Social needs like loneliness and housing unaffordability are rising in Australia. Social prescribing—a form of social care linking people to non-medical supports and services—is highly cost-effective (returning up to eight times the initial investment) and can significantly improve wellbeing and quality of life: but Australia lags behind the international community. Our ad hoc, fragmented efforts are hindered by a lack of consensus on data capture and the limited infrastructure available for organisations that run social prescribing programs. \n\nThe project aims to generate new real-world evidence on the feasibility, social benefits, and cost-effectiveness of social prescribing in Australia. Through a co-design approach we will create data infrastructure, optimise resource sharing, and promote long-term implementation. This is expected to benefit Australians by developing a social prescribing system that is responsive to the needs of our diverse communities and key stakeholders. \n\nThe findings will be shared with participants, providers, link workers, and policymakers, through policy briefs and media engagement to ensure widespread adoption. This will foster a sustainable, supportive social prescribing system that enhances wellbeing and reduces pressure on the social and healthcare systems. In turn this will drive economic and social benefits, creating a more connected and equitable Australia.\n\n"}}}
